When you pay for your education, you want to be sure that you are getting what you think you are getting. Online accredited degrees and online accredited degree programs, however, are not always what they appear to be. There are many online degree scams out there, but you can often detect these by looking at their accreditation - or lack of it.

Any college or university offering online degree programs can claim to be accredited - and many of them boldly make such claims. In order to make themselves look good, they will often post some kind of fancy accreditation logo or name to make you think that they are accredited.

The Government Lists Accredited Schools

When you go to look for the online accredited degree programs that you want, you can check with the government to see if that accreditation agency is legitimate or not.

The government itself does not actually accredit any school, but does publish a list of agencies that do make the criteria for schools of higher learning, and lists those agencies that are recognized by the state governments. Some accreditation agencies may be created for the purpose of providing standards within a group of colleges - but that particular accreditation agency may not be recognized outside of its own group. You should also be aware that not every college seeks accreditation. This means that there are some schools and universities that offer excellent online degree programs, and some of them have proven themselves, but for their own reasons, they do not want to go through the accreditation process. Before you sign up for any online degree programs, you need to give some serious thought to your future goals - and your possible future goals. Most likely, except for special schools, you will want to take online accredited degree programs because this will give you the widest range of possible future benefit. It will also help you to cover anything that you decide to do in the way of education and not have to backtrack because of some missteps.

Many colleges are springing up - almost overnight - that are offering all kinds of courses. What you want on your resume, however, is not just being able to say that you took so many classes or completed certain degrees, but you may also want the prestige that comes with a recognized and well-known college or institution of higher learning.

Stay Away from Schools That Offer Quick Degrees

Even when a school is offering online accredited nursing degrees, for instance, you want to notice the quality of what they are offering. A very good indicator that the college is not offering a quality education is if they promise that you will be able to get a degree in just a few months! Since it is not possible to cram four years of college into a few months - you can be sure that it is not really accredited by a recognized accrediting association.

Besides, the only one that you would really be hurting with such a degree is yourself. Employers will usually not accept it - which means that it will not help you with job or career advancement. In fact, it may haunt you for years - as some have recently learned, when they were fired after the degree was proven to be from a degree mill. The wise move, however, is simply to investigate any college you are not sure of, and only take courses from schools accredited in a more official capacity.
