Online education continues to grow by leaps and bounds. Considering that it is considerably less expensive than attending a college full-time, this growth rate is not surprising. Some say that one out of four students are enrolled in some form of distance education – particularly those that focus on the two-year Associate’s Degrees.

At the present time, most colleges and universities in the United States offer some kind of online courses. Their goal is to be able to provide instruction to an increasing number of students online. The result, according to the Sloan Consortium, is that college students are enrolling in online college programs faster than they are in traditional college courses and degrees.

Universities are also seeking to meet the demand to help students get a degree on line. Purdue, for instance, is seeking to increase its ability to handle online enrollment up to 10,000 students for the 2012-2013 school year, and to have 60 percent of its courses originating from the school (valpolife.com).

Other schools are also increasing their ability to offer courses on line, and some universities are also working to make graduate programs available, too. Business degrees, including the MBA, can also be taken through online programs, but some universities may only offer some courses for this degree through the Internet.

Some universities have sprung up recently in the last couple of decades that only offer their courses online. They do not have an actual campus. Others have multiple campuses spread over many states. Some of these colleges may require that students take some on-campus classes along with the online classes.

Career colleges also are rapidly expanding their offerings to be able to match the growing demand for students to get training online. Materials presented in the classrooms have also gone hi-tech so that online students can receive the same quality of instruction as in-class students. This includes DVD’s, videos, CD’s, PowerPoint presentations, and much more.

The University of Phoenix is currently known as the largest online college that there is in the United States. Other ones that are recognized include colleges and universities such as DeVry University, Kaplan University, Walden University, AIU Online, Capella University, and many more.

Just where a particular student should go depends on a number of factors and it will vary from one student to the next. It is recommended that you compare several online schools, and learn all you can about their programs and requirements to ensure that it will work best for you. There is a lot of flexibility between colleges in terms of cost, course offerings, teacher availability and qualifications, and possibly even in the mode of instruction through which you will receive your online lessons.

While most articles about distance learning will tout the benefits, there are also some things that will make an online education not in everyone’s interest. This makes it a very good idea for people to consider themselves carefully as to whether or not it is in their best interest to take online courses. Here are four things that may rule out online learning for you.

1. Online courses may actually be harder.

Many online programs actually have more work involved because the majority of your communication with the teacher is through writing. This means that there is more writing assignments and more papers given in online colleges than a student would normally have in a traditional classroom.

2. Less time to interact with the teacher.

Many online colleges have little interaction between the student and the teacher – others may have more. It will largely depend on the teacher as to how much meaningful communication will occur in any given course. Of course, you may also need to initiate some conversations through emails, and it may actually help your grade because it will show that you want to learn.

3. It requires great commitment and self-discipline.

Developing these qualities is a good thing and will certainly help you throughout your life. Some people, however, may simply have too many things pulling on them at the same time in their home environment to be able to develop these habits fully. Others may have a real problem with personal time management. For them, it may be better to actually go to a classroom where they can focus better on the material being given. If you can set aside a regular time and place to study – and will actually do it – then it can work for you.

4. Ability to focus on studies rather than Internet surfing.

Much of the material in an on line course has to be viewed with a computer. The temptation for some would be to waste time surfing the Internet or playing games rather than studying – it may be too difficult to manage for some. Of course, the truth is that it may also interfere with homework and studying for a traditional college class, too.

The bottom line is that everyone must make up his or her own mind about whether or not to earn a college degree through distance learning. There is no doubt that it costs less and enables a student to keep on working at their full time job, as well as making it convenient to be able to fit in study time at your own convenience.

You have undoubtedly seen many ads for online colleges and how you can earn your online degree in less time than you could in a traditional college. While the statement is true that you certainly can earn your college degree (or graduate degree faster online, there are some things that you should watch out for – especially if you are in a hurry to get a college degree.

Being in a hurry to make a choice about which online courses to take or which online college to enroll in can lead to not being careful. There are many online schools now online that are not all that they claim – which is one reason why you need to use caution. A number of them, for instance, just to fool people about their authenticity, have created their own logos and fancy names for an online accreditation board that they claim accepts them.

While the online university may recognize the importance of accreditation, all they are doing is faking it. In many cases, the truth is that no one recognizes them for educational quality. To avoid this problem, you will need to go to the Department of Education Website and find their accreditation board. If it is listed, further research will be needed to determine whether or not they actually do recognize that particular college.

Another thing you need to check for is whether or not you can take the online classes at your own pace. A number of online colleges do not allow this option, and all students are expected to proceed at the same rate as the traditional class. Some colleges, however, that do not permit independent study may have accelerated online programs for those who want to earn their degree faster.

Be on the lookout for where the teachers of the college are from, too. If they are mostly from that college, then it is a good sign that it is a degree mill. Also look to see if they have any experience in the field, too. A real university will have instructors from a wide variety of colleges, and many of them will be highly experienced in their fields.

Watch out for the idea that you can actually earn your degree any faster without having to work for it. You cannot earn life credits in a real college. A university offering this is not a real school that can benefit you when a real education – college degree – is required.

Distance learning is a powerful and great way to earn a college degree. Expect to work, though, and you will end up with a degree that is worth having.

There is some talk going on that says that online education, or distance learning, does not provide the same quality of education that you would get in a traditional classroom setting. Here are some factors that will help determine what is the source of quality education.

Learning Always Depends on the Student

It would be true that not every student can learn as much as possible from online learning as another student could learn from this method. While some students require a more visual method of instruction, others do just as well or better through reading and research. Still other students require a degree of social interaction and reinforcement from friends and teachers before they can do well with their studies – such as they might find on a traditional campus situation.

Experienced Instructors Are the Best

The best kind of instruction will take place between an instructor who both knows the material, and also knows how to convey it in the best possible way for quality learning to take place. A teacher in a traditional college may, for instance, be called upon to teach a course that he is not familiar with to fill in for another one temporarily. This means that a traditional situation is not always all that it could be. On the other hand, highly knowledgeable instructors can teach just as well although they may be using online instructional methods.

Quality Education Takes Place When the Student Focuses on Learning the Required Material

Coming back to the student, there is a lot that falls back on him or her. If they are willing to commit to learning well the material provided, and participate as required, then there really is little reason to believe that one method of instruction is better than the other – when all of these points are considered together.

The old ways are not always the only ways when it comes to learning.

If the student is desirous to do their best in their online studies, they can learn the material just as well as a traditional student. The truth is that in many cases today and with better developed systems for delivering lectures and visuals, that they are reading the same notes, hearing the same lectures, seeing the same audio-visuals, etc. Instead of one method of instruction versus another, it is merely which student is willing to do the work, and which one will just try to get by – the same as happens with two different students who sit in the same classroom.

Find out if you can make the best of an online education now.

Many people prefer a classroom type of education as opposed to studying on their own. These same people may also lack the necessary self-discipline to be able to complete a whole degree program in distance learning, too – especially in one that lets you work at your own pace. Fortunately, there is a way to take advantage of both worlds.

Many distance learning universities offer their classes in a synchronous learning format. This means, that whether you are taking classes on campus or through distance learning, both types of students study at the same time – and finish at the same time. Studying on your own is called asynchronous learning.

Synchronous learning works through an Internet connection to the actual class, which is then broadcast online. Students who are taking the class through e-learning can watch the actual class, and will get the exact same material as in-class students.

These students can also participate in the class, too. Through the Internet connection, they can ask questions, listen to other comments and questions of the other students, and receive direct and immediate answers from the Instructor, too.

Distance Learning Can Let You Be There

Because they are actually watching the live videos from the class, it will be necessary to log-in at the exact time that the class is occurring. Some forms of distance learning enable students to watch the video at other times, but then they will not be able to take advantage of any live interaction.

There are also various forms of online instruction that a synchronous learner may be able to receive. Many colleges and universities, for instance, now use SecondLife (and other similar programs) as the medium for their classroom communications. Students interact with each other and the teacher through the SecondLife interface.

If you are looking for synchronous learning in your distance learning education, you will need to carefully look at the many schools now offering online courses. Colleges are continually offering more and more courses online, and they are experimenting with different learning management systems, as well. You may need to take some courses on your own, and others in a synchronous format.

Online colleges offer many different forms of help for their students, too. You may want to look at several colleges to find one that offers the kind of help and encouragement you need. Some, for instance, provide various ways to communicate with other students taking the same classes you are. Other schools may have counselors that can help you with problems. An important consideration is how quickly can you get access to your distance learning teacher – and some schools have problems in this area.

Many students today have enrolled in some form of distance learning. Many of them have already graduated, thanks to the flexibility that online education provides. However, there are many others who have started toward earning an online degree, but never finished. Here are some simple tips to help ensure that you will be able to continue and complete your online education degree.

Make Sure That Online Education Is Right for You

Online education is a great way to be able to earn your college degree. Being able to finish the degree, however, is not necessarily based on the same set of factors that apply to students in a more traditional campus setting. This means that there is a lot more that you must do on your own – including motivating and disciplining yourself.

Before you start taking online courses, look over a number of factors that pertain to online students to find out if you have what it takes to do well with it. Distance learning will certainly work better for some people than it will for others.

Set A Regular Schedule for Study

Although an online education may offer a much higher level of convenience, it should not be assumed that it is any easier than traditional classes. In some ways they may even be harder, usually requiring more writing. Success requires that you set aside a regular time every week or every day, depending on how fast you want to complete the online class or classes.

Create Accountability for Your Studies

One thing that many students fail to do, which will hurt some, is that they have no accountability. Students on campus have interaction with other students and teachers that helps them to remember assignments, tests, and they encourage each other. While you may not know other students nearby, you can give permission to friends and family members to bug you regularly about how you are doing. Find someone who will do this regularly for you – and do not get mad at them when they do.

Become Active with Online College Groups

Many online schools have various ways to interact with other students in your class. Make friends with some of them, and they can help encourage you to continue. Be honest with them when you may be a little discouraged and they can help you better.

Keep Your Goals in Front of You

Find some way to keep in front of your view your goal or reason for getting the degree. If it is to get a degree, put a graduation picture where you can see it regularly.

If you are looking for a technical school that has been around for awhile, then ECPI, College of Technology may be just what you are looking for. The college has been around for about 40 years and has several campuses in Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and a distance learning school.

ECPI Degree Programs Available

ECPI offers a number of distance learning degrees, including Associate’s Degrees and Bachelor’s Degrees. Because the school offers students the ability to be able to take courses throughout the year, this reduces the amount of time needed to complete college degrees. An Associate’s Degree can be completed in a year-and-a-half, and a Bachelor’s Degree can be finished in two-and-a-half years. Certification programs are also available.

Degree programs are offered in four major areas. This includes a focus on Technology, Business, the Health Sciences, and the Culinary fields. There is also a major in the field of Criminal Justice available, which focuses on training for Homeland Security.

Learn computer programming through online learning

In the Technology field, students can major in popular areas such as Biomedical Technology, Game Programming Simulation, Network Security, Web Development, Database Programming, IT Management, and more. Health Sciences offers students the opportunity to get training in the areas of Practical Nursing, Registered Nursing, Medical Assistant, Physical Therapy, Medical Administration, Massage Therapy, Radiography, and more.

ECPI Distance Learning Provides Flexibility

Online courses enable the students at ECPI to be able to adjust their studies to their own needs. Class sizes are kept small in order to give students a more personalized training, and they have access to their instructor through the faculty’s virtual office hours.

Training includes access to industry-standard simulation software and other online networks. The school also has an online library that students may access.

Career Services Available at ECPI

Career services are available to help students get launched into their career field. The school keeps in touch with many possible employers in order to help their graduates get placed quickly. Because the school provides hands-on experience (software for online students), graduates are more likely to be hired than graduates of schools that do not offer such training to familiarize them with real world applications and experience.

Financial Aid Is Available for Students and for Military

The ECPI, College of Technology offers financial aid to students. Several college scholarships are also available for its students. Military students can get financial assistance through the GI Bill, the Air Force AU-ABC Program, the Navy College Program Distance Learning Partnership, and some of the other available government programs. More programs are also being added.

The Jones International University (JIU) was founded in 1993 by Glenn R. Jones and has been credited with being the first university ever to be completely online. This unique honor has enabled it to set the bar in online education, and it continues to do so. The distance learning University was accredited by the Higher Learning Commission in 1999 and by the North Central Association. It is a for-profit organization.

Jones International University offers degrees that range from an Associate’s Degree up through the Doctorate Degrees. There are more than 150 professors that teach in the University and each one has at least a Master’s Degree.

There are two main programs of training in the University – the School of Education and the School of Business. Each one has professors that come from a wide range of other schools, giving them an excellent background to provide students with the education needed to be able to compete in those particular fields.

Online courses are taken at specified times of the year, and are divided up into weekly modules. Each week, so many projects will be assigned to each student and this may consist of a paper, a reading assignment, required participation in a discussion forum, or work on a project. All assignments do need to be completed each week.

Class work is autonomous, which allows students to log in at any time during the week. Various discussion questions will be posted each week, and students will need to answer them, as well as make comments on what other students have said. Undergraduate courses require – on average – between six to fifteen hours per week, per course. Graduate courses will require between 12 to 19 hours per week.

JIU offers a number of ways that students can be helped with their finances. Financial aid is available in the form of college scholarships, grants, and education loans.

There are also programs available that enable online students to be able to get their education at an advanced rate. Students can get, for instance, a Bachelor’s Degree and a Master’s Degree in four years. It takes three years and four months to complete the Bachelor’s Degree, then eight courses for the Master’s Degree are completed in the next eight months.

Jones International University stays on the leading edge in education in both fields of business and education. The online school seeks to prepare its graduates to be ready to go to work and succeed in their chosen career field.

Ellis University is a new college for online students. It was started in Chicago in 2008 and then received national accreditation in 2009. Its goal is to provide its students with the education and training needed to be ready to go to work in the field that your degree programs are specialized on.

The university offers a number of college undergraduate degrees with a focus on practical courses. It has both Associate Degrees and Bachelor degree programs.

Graduate work is available in several Master’s Degree programs. These include various MBA’s; a Master of Science in Management; a Master of Science in Instructional Technology; and a Master of Arts in Education. All graduate level courses are offered on a distance learning basis.

In order to help students be able to get the interactive education needed, all faculty members are required to log into their email six days each week. This is sure to give students the quick answers to their questions that they need for a continuous, interesting, and informative education. They also receive training on using the online media that the university uses. All their instructors also have at least a Master’s Degree in the field that they are teaching. Each of the online courses is interactive and includes video simulations, flash animations, discussion posts, and other tools to enhance a campus environment.

Enrolling in Ellis University requires that students have worked for three years after graduating from high school. If they have less than the required three years, they may also enroll if they have at least thirty college credits from another college. Students that have less than 12 hours credit from any college will be required to take 12 hours of classes toward their Success Certificate. These courses are designed to help students integrate into college life and be prepared for better results in terms of study and social interaction. The four courses include College Success Seminar, College Composition I; Introductory Concepts of Mathematics, and Intro to Sociology.

In order to help its students with financial aid, the University offers a way to reduce tuition by as much as 50 percent through its Ellis Opportunity Grant. The Grant is available for both undergraduate degree programs and graduate programs. It is available each year and certain academic requirements must be met.

Ellis University also accepts military students. Currently, about one-third of their online students have a military background. Spouses of veterans, as well as their dependents, are also eligible to receive special discounts for their education.
