Weighing the Benefits and Drawbacks of Distance Learning

The new semester is getting ready to start and you still have not decided where to go. You know you need to choose a college but are not sure which one. You have a job with some security, and with the economic uncertainty right now, you find yourself a little hesitant about moving away to a strange place. Here are some tips that will help you to decide whether you should pack up and leave – or stay and get enrolled in a distance learning program.

Advantages of Distance Learning – Every college is unique and each one has different things to offer. This is also true in online education, but here are some advantages that distance learning will provide.

1. You don’t need to disrupt your life or career – This is probably the greatest feature of online education. Your life – just as it is – can keep on going while you get your next degree. By taking distance education courses, you empower yourself right where you are. You get the benefits of the education, and keep on going with your life, too.  If you are already in the career of your choice, then taking distance courses allows that career to continue uninterrupted.

2. Can choose an online degree program from anywhere – A second advantage – probably just about as important as the first one – is that you could enroll in any college – anywhere – that you can afford. And you can get the benefit of even the best online college – without having to move to that college or university. It may even be possible to take online classes at more than one great college, too.

3. Take classes on your schedule – No matter what your current work schedule is, many online degrees allow you to take the classes at your own convenience.

That means that even if the only time you have to study is in the early morning hours – then even that is possible with some programs. What could be better than going to classes when you can? Of course, not all of them will permit this, but many do.

4. Less expensive – Another great benefit is that it could cost you considerably less. For one thing, you do not need to use up any gas getting to your online classes, either. Other costs will not apply, either, such as some of the fees.

Drawbacks of Distance Learning – 1. May limit networking ability on campus – One disadvantage would be that you may not be able to build a network that could help you get launched quickly into your new career when you graduate. But then if you are already in your career, this would not be a real problem.

2. Little social interaction with new people – If you are single and looking for that special someone, then you probably would not want to take a distance learning program. You certainly could meet more people on campus.

3. Do not have access to campus facilities – A third disadvantage of distance learning would be that you cannot take advantage of the things that the campus has to offer in the way of special facilities and activities. Only you can decide just how important that would be to you.

Distance learning may not be for everyone – but neither is on campus learning. It is a choice that you will have to make. Most colleges now offer the opportunity to earn a degree from home. Why not look into it more right now and start to see why so many people are enrolling in distance learning classes – all over the world. Is there a new college degree just waiting for you to claim?
