Diploma Mill Alert

Taking some kind of distance learning classes or working toward an online degree should lead you toward a degree worth having. Unfortunately, this is not always the case. Many people learn – after they spend thousands of dollars toward a college degree – that all their learning did not get them the coveted paper they had hoped they were getting. Instead, they were scammed – and still no real degree in sight. Here are some tips about choosing your distance learning program and making sure that it will really lead to the degree you want.

Don’t Believe Everything You Read About Online Colleges – A fancy website with a lot of good looking icons or emblems really does not mean anything. In fact, if it looks and sounds too good – it probably is. Be wary of colleges that have no history, no campus, large numbers of graduates, or a lot of hype.

Check into its Accreditation – Most continuing education scams will claim accreditation. Just about everyone knows this is important – and so do the scammers. Look beyond the words and do some investigating – it could save you a bundle. The truth, though, is that many good schools do not offer accredited online degrees. It really is up to each state to make its own laws concerning this, so distance learning schools that claim it will have to stand on their own merit.

One main problem with online degree scams is that scammers have to make their "college" in some ways more attractive than a real one.

They do this primarily in two ways – by offering the same degree for less (often much less), or they offer it in a much shorter time frame.

Look at the Teachers and Where They Went to School – One good way to tell about an online college is to see where the teachers graduated from. If all of them (or most) come from colleges you never heard of, or can’t find on the Internet – or anywhere else, then you can be sure it is a scam.
