The Jones International University (JIU) was founded in 1993 by Glenn R. Jones and has been credited with being the first university ever to be completely online. This unique honor has enabled it to set the bar in online education, and it continues to do so. The distance learning University was accredited by the Higher Learning Commission in 1999 and by the North Central Association. It is a for-profit organization.
Jones International University offers degrees that range from an Associate’s Degree up through the Doctorate Degrees. There are more than 150 professors that teach in the University and each one has at least a Master’s Degree.
There are two main programs of training in the University – the School of Education and the School of Business. Each one has professors that come from a wide range of other schools, giving them an excellent background to provide students with the education needed to be able to compete in those particular fields.
Online courses are taken at specified times of the year, and are divided up into weekly modules. Each week, so many projects will be assigned to each student and this may consist of a paper, a reading assignment, required participation in a discussion forum, or work on a project. All assignments do need to be completed each week.
Class work is autonomous, which allows students to log in at any time during the week. Various discussion questions will be posted each week, and students will need to answer them, as well as make comments on what other students have said. Undergraduate courses require – on average – between six to fifteen hours per week, per course. Graduate courses will require between 12 to 19 hours per week.
JIU offers a number of ways that students can be helped with their finances. Financial aid is available in the form of college scholarships, grants, and education loans.
There are also programs available that enable online students to be able to get their education at an advanced rate. Students can get, for instance, a Bachelor’s Degree and a Master’s Degree in four years. It takes three years and four months to complete the Bachelor’s Degree, then eight courses for the Master’s Degree are completed in the next eight months.
