Whether you are interested in earning more credits toward your college degree, or simply want to take a course this summer because you have more time, taking it through online education may be just the convenience you need. Many colleges are offering online courses that you can take at any time – and the summer months may be the perfect time to earn some extra credits.

Colleges everywhere are offering online classes. While not all of them will let you take courses when you want, and some may not even offer many in the summer, many of them do. This means that you can enroll in any course you want, and complete it before the summer is over. If you are studious, it may even be possible to complete two – and maybe more.

Continuing Education Courses Available

If you need to keep up your certification for your career, you can take continuing education courses online. These courses can be taken through most colleges, and you can work on them from your own home. Taking these courses will also enable you to work toward your next college degree.

Learn a New Hobby Through Online Classes

If you have ever wanted to learn a new hobby, craft, or new ability, taking distance learning classes may be the perfect way for you to do it. Most subjects can be found offered through many accredited colleges.

Increase Your Value to Your Employer with an Online College Course

It may also be an excellent time to learn new things that you can apply at work. Making yourself more valuable to your employer by being able to do more is a sure way to get longevity on the job. Online courses that will develop or enhance your computer proficiency, or management abilities, may prove to be very useful. It is even possible that your employer may be willing to pay for it, too.

Take a “Fun” Course Over the Summer

Instead of taking the summer off, or continuing to hit the books like you have been doing as you earn your college degree, take a little time off by taking a course that you have always wanted to take. Learn a new hobby, take a course to help you start your own business, study online courses such as Parks, Recreation and Fitness, or just choose a free distance learning course that will be fun for you.

The number of courses available through online colleges is quite large for this summer. Schools are increasing the number of courses that they offer and you should make sure that you are enrolled on time. Some colleges will let you proceed at your own rate and others will have a scheduled session in which you must complete the course.

When you need to take some college classes or earn a college degree, you want to seriously consider taking them through an online college. This will give you many advantages that are not available through traditional classroom education. Distance learning has become highly developed in some accredited schools and universities, and you will want to take advantage of it while you can.

It Removes Common Time Constraints

One of the most commonly enjoyed benefits of online college courses is that you are given control of when you want to view the class (unless you are enrolled in synchronous learning – where everyone logs in at the same time). This makes it possible for people who have full-time jobs, or who watch children or seniors to be able to find a convenient time to study.

The convenience of taking online classes enables students to continue taking classes toward any degree level. While not all degrees are completely available online, many of them are, and they may also be available in some unique instructional forms, such as SecondLife, which many colleges now use, iTunes, or a similar media format.

It Overcomes the Obstacle of Distance

Even if you are not near a college you can still distance learn from a college – located anywhere. All you need is to be able to access the Internet and have a high-speed connection. Even if you are overseas and in the military, you can still take advantage of online education.

E-learning Places Lower Financial Burdens on Students

Taking college courses online enables students to enjoy lower college costs and they can continue to earn as they go and pay for it. While college scholarships have been reduced and some have even disappeared, online students pay less for their education than do students in a traditional classroom situation.

Enables Universities to Expand Their Student Body

Many universities who have also been hurt by the lack of college scholarships are seeking to make up for fewer students by offering online college classes – and more of them. This means your favorite college may be offering classes online that it did not even offer as recently as a year ago. Don’t forget to look for unusual scholarships, as well, one that you may find that you qualify for.

Enables Students to Get an Education Who Otherwise Might Not Be Able

If you find yourself unable to go to the college of your choice to either get a degree, or earn an advanced degree, then taking college courses online may be your answer. Online colleges offer support for their students by providing contact with the teacher and many also enable contact with other students in the same fields through chatrooms. Getting support from alumni is also possible and so is help with career planning.

It is true that online learning is different than traditional learning taught in a classroom. There, students can look their instructors in the eye, and they can also have pressure put on them to achieve from the other students who are trying to get a good grade. Students will often talk about having to study, write papers, and other things that often helps remind others that earning a college degree is going to take some work.

In an online learning situation, the pressure is not there – partly because there is not any interaction with other students in the same class or situation. When taking distance learning courses, students are sent materials, or they can access it online, and then they are on their own – to finish the course – or not.

If you are going to complete a degree online, you will have to do some things a little bit differently. It will take a little bit of foresight, and planning, and self-discipline. Here are some things you will need to do to have success as a student if you want to finish with a college degree in your hand.

1. Set Your Eyes on the Goal. If you are just getting started, then you need to realize that you are not going to earn the online degree in one or two semesters. Put a picture of a graduate on your refrigerator, or notebook, or on your mirror – someplace where you will see it everyday. Then, determine to be that person.

2. Take Only What You Can Handle. There is little that will discourage you more than if you take too many courses. This may leave too little free time – which can put extra stress on you. You still want some kind of a social life – but not enough to interfere with your goal of the degree.

3. Set Aside a Regular Study Schedule. Create a place and a time in which you will study your course material and write your papers. It should be quiet, well lit, and at a time when you are not too tired to remember anything.

4. Get Plenty of Rest. Any kind of learning is easier when you are well rested. Discouragement can also enter the picture if you stay tired and stressed out.

5. Talk with Other Students. Some online colleges have a way for students to be able to meet and chat online. This is especially valuable when they are taking the same online course that you are and have similar interests. This can also add a lot of value to your instruction as you may be able to get tips and good suggestions from a friend – and also help them, too.

Distance learning continues to grow as a viable means to get a college education. Students around the world are grabbing at the opportunity to get a college degree, or one of the advanced degrees by using online methods. Most college degrees – from the traditional to the exotic – are available somewhere for almost every major imaginable.

The various methods of teaching classes using more traditional forms are continuing to be used online, but many new methods are also being developed. As the number of new methods expands – and in some cases – improve, the ability of students to learn is also improving. There are many new choices arising that are sure to make education far more interesting than education ever was before.

One study, which was performed by the Department of Education in 2009, reported that “Students who took all or part of their class online performed better, on average, than those taking the same course through traditional face-to-face instruction.” One reason for this could be that online students often have to do more writing than traditional students, and the deeper study needed for writing may lead to a better understanding of the various topics.

The number of students taking distance learning courses continues to grow. This is occurring on a worldwide basis, and students can easily take courses from other universities in other countries. In Europe and Asia, there is a growing trend where students take online courses from two different colleges at the same time, and then graduate with a degree from both – called dual-degree programs.

Others taking advantage of online education are professionals who are taking online courses to either keep up with their profession, or to be able to progress in it. Many life-long learners are also using the opportunity of taking online classes when convenient. Not only does this enable them to take courses from any college or university, but it also enables them to take a desired course and complete it at the speed they are able.

With money and college scholarships being more difficult to obtain, the lower cost of taking courses online is one way many students are getting their education. Courses can be taken at a slower pace, allowing students to stay on their current job, and letting them study whenever you are able to find the time. This enables friendships, careers, etc., to stay on track and the life not have to be disrupted so that a degree can be earned.

Online education continues to grow by leaps and bounds. Considering that it is considerably less expensive than attending a college full-time, this growth rate is not surprising. Some say that one out of four students are enrolled in some form of distance education – particularly those that focus on the two-year Associate’s Degrees.

At the present time, most colleges and universities in the United States offer some kind of online courses. Their goal is to be able to provide instruction to an increasing number of students online. The result, according to the Sloan Consortium, is that college students are enrolling in online college programs faster than they are in traditional college courses and degrees.

Universities are also seeking to meet the demand to help students get a degree on line. Purdue, for instance, is seeking to increase its ability to handle online enrollment up to 10,000 students for the 2012-2013 school year, and to have 60 percent of its courses originating from the school (valpolife.com).

Other schools are also increasing their ability to offer courses on line, and some universities are also working to make graduate programs available, too. Business degrees, including the MBA, can also be taken through online programs, but some universities may only offer some courses for this degree through the Internet.

Some universities have sprung up recently in the last couple of decades that only offer their courses online. They do not have an actual campus. Others have multiple campuses spread over many states. Some of these colleges may require that students take some on-campus classes along with the online classes.

Career colleges also are rapidly expanding their offerings to be able to match the growing demand for students to get training online. Materials presented in the classrooms have also gone hi-tech so that online students can receive the same quality of instruction as in-class students. This includes DVD’s, videos, CD’s, PowerPoint presentations, and much more.

The University of Phoenix is currently known as the largest online college that there is in the United States. Other ones that are recognized include colleges and universities such as DeVry University, Kaplan University, Walden University, AIU Online, Capella University, and many more.

Just where a particular student should go depends on a number of factors and it will vary from one student to the next. It is recommended that you compare several online schools, and learn all you can about their programs and requirements to ensure that it will work best for you. There is a lot of flexibility between colleges in terms of cost, course offerings, teacher availability and qualifications, and possibly even in the mode of instruction through which you will receive your online lessons.

Online learning has sometimes been considered to be a second-rate method of getting a college level (or higher) education. Some have thought that there is no better form than a traditional model of teacher and pupil in the same classroom – looking at each other eye-to-eye.

There is, however, a side benefit of distance learning that is taking place in some online schools. Some business schools that offer an MBA, for instance, also offer it in segments in different locations. Most of the online segments are offered to groups of students in foreign countries, adding into the instruction an interaction with other cultures, providing a much broader learning that prepares students better for an international business world.

In one particular school called U21Global, which is based in Singapore, it united with other business schools to add courses to their curriculum. Ft.com reported that this situation had students attending two-week modules in six locations over an 18-month period. Those courses emphasized international topics, and included things like civilizations and leadership, cultures, and global markets and institutions.

The experience proved to be highly beneficial for these distance learning students. Instead, as some suppose, that they missed out on interaction with other students, those that were in this learning situation actually benefited more than those who only attended a classroom. These students were actually able to interact with students on a cultural plane, and gained a far greater business experience as they learned from students in places like Australia, India, China, Vietnam, America and Europe.

Traditional Instruction Is Not Always Better.

The article also mentioned that when businesses today want to get some answers and make decisions, they often use online methods. They will get on Skype, or an equivalent program, meet each other online, and then discuss the issues of the day. This is simply business reaching out to others and passing instructions and learning through the Internet. Learning does not have to be face to face in order to succeed.

This online learning experience actually gave the students an international understanding while interacting with them through the Internet. In some cases, it is also creating international relationships that may last a long time.

While this situation does not currently reflect what many online schools in the United States are doing now, it does show that there are ways in which an online education may actually provide an even broader education than traditional classes are able to give.

Online learning is still a form of instruction that may only be in its infancy. Although there are many different forms of instruction already available, time, money and demand will certainly help to open new methodologies for distance learning – many of which may not have even begun to be imagined yet.

While most articles about distance learning will tout the benefits, there are also some things that will make an online education not in everyone’s interest. This makes it a very good idea for people to consider themselves carefully as to whether or not it is in their best interest to take online courses. Here are four things that may rule out online learning for you.

1. Online courses may actually be harder.

Many online programs actually have more work involved because the majority of your communication with the teacher is through writing. This means that there is more writing assignments and more papers given in online colleges than a student would normally have in a traditional classroom.

2. Less time to interact with the teacher.

Many online colleges have little interaction between the student and the teacher – others may have more. It will largely depend on the teacher as to how much meaningful communication will occur in any given course. Of course, you may also need to initiate some conversations through emails, and it may actually help your grade because it will show that you want to learn.

3. It requires great commitment and self-discipline.

Developing these qualities is a good thing and will certainly help you throughout your life. Some people, however, may simply have too many things pulling on them at the same time in their home environment to be able to develop these habits fully. Others may have a real problem with personal time management. For them, it may be better to actually go to a classroom where they can focus better on the material being given. If you can set aside a regular time and place to study – and will actually do it – then it can work for you.

4. Ability to focus on studies rather than Internet surfing.

Much of the material in an on line course has to be viewed with a computer. The temptation for some would be to waste time surfing the Internet or playing games rather than studying – it may be too difficult to manage for some. Of course, the truth is that it may also interfere with homework and studying for a traditional college class, too.

The bottom line is that everyone must make up his or her own mind about whether or not to earn a college degree through distance learning. There is no doubt that it costs less and enables a student to keep on working at their full time job, as well as making it convenient to be able to fit in study time at your own convenience.

There is some talk going on that says that online education, or distance learning, does not provide the same quality of education that you would get in a traditional classroom setting. Here are some factors that will help determine what is the source of quality education.

Learning Always Depends on the Student

It would be true that not every student can learn as much as possible from online learning as another student could learn from this method. While some students require a more visual method of instruction, others do just as well or better through reading and research. Still other students require a degree of social interaction and reinforcement from friends and teachers before they can do well with their studies – such as they might find on a traditional campus situation.

Experienced Instructors Are the Best

The best kind of instruction will take place between an instructor who both knows the material, and also knows how to convey it in the best possible way for quality learning to take place. A teacher in a traditional college may, for instance, be called upon to teach a course that he is not familiar with to fill in for another one temporarily. This means that a traditional situation is not always all that it could be. On the other hand, highly knowledgeable instructors can teach just as well although they may be using online instructional methods.

Quality Education Takes Place When the Student Focuses on Learning the Required Material

Coming back to the student, there is a lot that falls back on him or her. If they are willing to commit to learning well the material provided, and participate as required, then there really is little reason to believe that one method of instruction is better than the other – when all of these points are considered together.

The old ways are not always the only ways when it comes to learning.

If the student is desirous to do their best in their online studies, they can learn the material just as well as a traditional student. The truth is that in many cases today and with better developed systems for delivering lectures and visuals, that they are reading the same notes, hearing the same lectures, seeing the same audio-visuals, etc. Instead of one method of instruction versus another, it is merely which student is willing to do the work, and which one will just try to get by – the same as happens with two different students who sit in the same classroom.

Find out if you can make the best of an online education now.

If you are currently between careers, or feel that you are limited because of a lack of significant training to progress any higher, then distance learning may be the answer you are looking for. Distance learning in most fields is now readily available, and there is a lot of flexibility in the various degree programs, which will enable you to study at your convenience.

Choose Your Alternate or New Career Carefully

Selecting a new career should involve some research. You will want to choose a career field that is going to be in demand for several years in the future, and one that is not already flooded with unemployed job applicants.

You may also want to consider one that is close to your present career field, because you may already have enough experience to make you in-demand, and more training could even make you one to be sought out. New training may also enable you to be promoted within your current company, as well, but you will need to talk this over with them before taking courses to ensure you get the courses you need – and can also possibly get your employer to pay for it, too.

Check the Online Schools to Discover the Right One

Many schools now offer online education and they also enable you to take the courses you need when you are able to do so. This allows you to earn your certificate or degree at a pace that you can handle. This can enable you to be able to reduce the pressure that you might experience in an on-campus situation, due to trying to balance time constraints from job activities, and family life.

Some online schools offer newer forms of technology in the delivery methods of their courses, and some forms may be better suited than others – depending on your own technological capabilities and desires. Some courses, for instance, may rely on DVD’s and digital materials, which can be taken anywhere, and other colleges may require synchronous learning, which means you would have to be able to log-in to an online class at a specified time.

Ensure You Can Give Appropriate Study Time

You do not want to try and take too many courses at the same time. This can overload you with stress, and then you will be apt to quit because it was just too much. Pace yourself and do a little bit each day to keep on top of it. Before you know it, you will have completed your online learning requirements and obtained your next degree.

Many students today have enrolled in some form of distance learning. Many of them have already graduated, thanks to the flexibility that online education provides. However, there are many others who have started toward earning an online degree, but never finished. Here are some simple tips to help ensure that you will be able to continue and complete your online education degree.

Make Sure That Online Education Is Right for You

Online education is a great way to be able to earn your college degree. Being able to finish the degree, however, is not necessarily based on the same set of factors that apply to students in a more traditional campus setting. This means that there is a lot more that you must do on your own – including motivating and disciplining yourself.

Before you start taking online courses, look over a number of factors that pertain to online students to find out if you have what it takes to do well with it. Distance learning will certainly work better for some people than it will for others.

Set A Regular Schedule for Study

Although an online education may offer a much higher level of convenience, it should not be assumed that it is any easier than traditional classes. In some ways they may even be harder, usually requiring more writing. Success requires that you set aside a regular time every week or every day, depending on how fast you want to complete the online class or classes.

Create Accountability for Your Studies

One thing that many students fail to do, which will hurt some, is that they have no accountability. Students on campus have interaction with other students and teachers that helps them to remember assignments, tests, and they encourage each other. While you may not know other students nearby, you can give permission to friends and family members to bug you regularly about how you are doing. Find someone who will do this regularly for you – and do not get mad at them when they do.

Become Active with Online College Groups

Many online schools have various ways to interact with other students in your class. Make friends with some of them, and they can help encourage you to continue. Be honest with them when you may be a little discouraged and they can help you better.

Keep Your Goals in Front of You

Find some way to keep in front of your view your goal or reason for getting the degree. If it is to get a degree, put a graduation picture where you can see it regularly. If it is certification, or to enter a new career field, do something similar that you will see every day, and then take a few minutes to reflect on how nice it will be when you get there.

Strengthen Your Self-Discipline

Sharpen your ability to do what you need to do to complete your online degree. Remove distractions, set schedules, and make sure you do what you need to do – when you need to do it.
