Is Distance Learning Right For You?
If you think resisting the temptation to cut class is hard, try it when you
are at home in your PJs and your favorite program is about to come on television.
Taking an online college degree course requires a lot of discipline and it’s
not right for everyone.
There has to be a key motivating element in your life that drives you to your
computer to sit and learn for hours. Perhaps you may be thinking that you do
this anyway simply surfing the web but will you still be able to sit there
when you have to as opposed to when you want to? If the motivation is there
the answer is probably yes.
One student who works a full time corporate job and raises a family said, “It’s
(online education) not for everyone. You have to be determined to do it; you
have to do it because it’s important to you.”

The flexibility of online learning has been a solution to many who have wanted
to earn their degree for various reasons but never had the time. The increasing
advancement of the internet has made online college degree programs user friendly,
more efficient and comprehensively effective.
Yet there are difficult attributes to online learning that some students never
get used to. Human interaction between peers and professors are replaced with
chat rooms, message boards, e-mails and video. Feeding off of others energy
is sometimes an integral part of the learning process. If you feel you might
be the type of person who is uninspired to learn without the presence of others,
distance learning may not be right for you.
Additionally, some courses use actual textbooks for reading assignments while
others post their text on the web. Some students are not comfortable with reading
a book on the glow of a computer screen; approach this issue before you sign
up for a class.
If you are unsure of whether or not your personality would benefit from an
online education there are a number of personality tests that will assist you
in making a decision. The following suggestions are free resources for self-
