Useful Terms for Distance Learning

Asynchronous Learning: A process of learning that allows the student to learn material at their own pace while physically being separate from their instructor.

Computer Based Training (CBT): A computer that provides instructional material in lieu of classroom, practical or human taught experience. The material is usually presented in the form of a CD-Rom, LAN or on the internet.

Continuing Education Curriculum (CEC): Courses that teach education to professionals with the aim to keep them current in their chosen profession.

Correspondence Course: Refers to the good old fashioned snail mail way of communicating. Institutions of Learning use written correspondence to interact with their students.

Distance Learning: Distance learning is defined as a formal education process where the majority of the instruction occurs when the instructor and student are not in the same location. The process and are often separated by time.

Distance Training: A method of distance learning for professionals involved in corporate universities or similar programs designed to provide employees with education that assist meeting business objectives.

e-Learning: A process that facilitates education using a network (Internet, LAN or WAN).

e-Learner: A student that uses e-learning to gain education

Instructor-led Training (ILT): Education conducted by an instructor in a physical location or via e-learning.

Online Learning: e-learning specifically over the internet as opposed to other networks.

Online Training: A reference to e-learning specifically over the internet and typically used in conjunction with corporations or professionals.

Synchronous Learning: A process of learning where the student and instructor interact simultaneously at given times. The traditional classroom approach to learning is an example of synchronous learning.

Units: A designated amount of information in one subject that must be learned before one can move on to the next subject area.

Virtual: Created, simulated, or carried on by means of a computer or computer network

Web Based Training (WBT): A form of training that utilizes a network. WBT is usually associated with professionals or corporations.
